The University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) offers a variety of academic programmes many of which are the nation's best. Currently, there are two main faculties at UMaT namely: 1. Faculty of Engineering 2. Faculty of Mineral Resource Technology and 3. Centre for Communication and Entrepreneurship Skills (CENCES)
The Faculty of Engineering consists of Departments of Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering and Mathematics. We produce Engineers who are capable of making a career in Teaching, Research, Commerce and Industry. Faculty of Engineering is dynamic and progressive. We aim to be a centre of excellence within the framework of its institutional role. The Faculty produces high quality research in the form of :
Students Enrolments
1. Publications which advance knowledge in the Faculty’s disciplines. 2. Creative works which advance knowledge 3. Bachelors and Masters Graduates who have advanced methological skills and who are able to advance or to apply knowledge in their discipline. The Faculty constitutes a student body, at both undergraduate and post-graduate level, which is talented and able to perform within the Faculty’s academic programmes. Presently we have 364 students in the Faculty. The female enrolment is 12% of the students’ enrolment in the Faculty.
Academic & Administrative Staff The Faculty has a committed and highly motivated academic and administrative staff. The Faculty has a very good expertise in Thermo fluid, Machine Design, Solid Body Engineering, Electrical Power system, Communication Systems, Applied Mathematics, Statistics and Financial Engineering. Quality Assurance Through the University Authority the Quality Assurance Unit enable the Faculty to review regularly the efficiency and effectiveness of its activities and extent to which it is achieving its approved objections. It also, where necessary, works with National Accreditation Board and Professional Societies to ensure that its activities are of the highest possible quality. International and Regional Collaboration The Faculty foster collaboration and cooperation with other higher educational institutions like Missouri University of Science and Technology, U.S.A., Montana University, U.S.A, Federal University of Technology, Akure, Nigeria and Kristo Asafo Technology Workshop at Otsreku in Ghana to strengthen its teaching and research programmes wherever possible. Laboratories Four new laboratories and two computer laboratories have been constructed and equipped for teaching and learning purposes. They are: 1. Electricity and Electronics Laboratory This laboratory takes care of experiments on the fundamentals of electricity and electronics (DC and AC circuits, electromagnetism, motors and generators, AC-DC-AC conversion circuits); semi-conductor devices; AM, FM communications circuits; linear electronics (operational amplifiers); basic digital logic; feedback, tuned and power amplifiers; oscillators and filters. 2. Technical Preparation Laboratory Technical Preparation LaboratoryWork in this laboratory involves the basics of the following relevant areas: hydraulics and pneumatics; communications; CNC lathe and milling machines; process control; mechanics. Other works in the laboratory include bending and vacuum forming of plastics; solar energy; computerized storage; microprocessors and microcontroller technology. 3. Process Control Laboratory Process Control LaboratoryThis laboratory is centered on the monitoring of processes using temperature, pressure, flow, liquid level sensors/ transducers and load cells in conjunction with data acquisition card and a process control simulator. 4. Computer-Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) Laboratory Computer-Intergrated Manufacturing(CIM) LaboratoryThis CIM laboratory has to do with robots; machine tending, CNC milling and lathe machines stations; conveyor stop assemblies with pallet tracking systems; closed loop pallet conveyor with programmable logic controllers; automated storage and retrieval system; aluminum coating industrial process control; hydraulic assembly and pneumatic feeding stations. Future Plans Department of Computer Engineering and Information Technology will fully commence by the next academic session, 2009/2010. Post is in our plan to fully commence the Post-graduate programmes (both in MSc/MPhil and PhD) in Mathematics, Statistics, Financial Engineering, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering soonest. The other laboratories which are: 1. Hydraulics laboratory 2. Pneumatics laboratory 3. Air conditioning & Refrigeration laboratory will be equipped soonest.
The Faculty of Mineral Resources Technology was established in October 2001 when the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) School of Mines, Tarkwa was elevated to the status of a University College to train high-level personnel in Mining and allied engineering disciplines. 1. Geomatic Engineering Except for Geomatic and Petroleum Engineering, the other three departments offer postgraduate programmes. The number of academic staff in the Faculty is 42 and these are highly qualified; with vast industrial experience. They are therefore able to wedge theoretical knowledge with professional practice when presenting their lectures. No wonder, our products easily get employment, are among the finest and are in high demand. A large number of our alumini are working in Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Cote D’Ivoire, Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, DR Congo, Tanzania, South Africa etc.
CENCES is an acronym for “Centre for Communication and Entrepreneurship Skills”. CENCES was established in the 2011/2012 academic year to co-ordinate the teaching and learning of all the non hard core science (and technology) disciplines at the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT). It is to serve as the nucleus of the future Faculty of Integrated Management Sciences. CENCES operates at the level of a department but it is not subsumed under any faculty; it is a servicing department and does not run its own degree programmes. Courses offered under CENCES are as follows: Semester I Semester II The department has a total of ten (10) staff members, out of which seven (7) are permanent and three (3) from other departments.
