The Department offers programmes leading to the award of a BSc. (Geological Enginnering), MSc./MPhil. (Geological Engineering) and a PhD (Geological Engineering).

The BSc programme aims at providing knowledge of the engineering properties of earth materials, mineral deposits, and groundwater resources. The exploitation of these resources can impact the environment so the programme gives serious considerations to such issues through a well-balanced curriculum between geology, groundwater, engineering and the environment

The Graduate programmes run on a modular basis and are well designed to provide a firm grounding in advanced concepts and methods in mineral exploration, geotechnical engineering, water resources, and environmental management. They are intended to produce motivated and highly qualified professionals who are capable of identifying and solving the numerous problems in the above fields.

The Department has a strong academic staff that reflects the courses that are run in the various programmes. The staff have been trained locally and abroad and have had long practical experience in teaching and research. Some have been engaged in international research activities and/or have been active participants at both local and international conferences, workshops and seminars.
The Department is endowed with adequate resources to undertake research and outreach activities in geotechnical and water resources investigations, mineral exploration, and ore microscopy.

Our graduates work in a very broad range of jobs and are employed in geology, exploration, mining, construction, environmental, and water industries and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO’s), throughout Africa.

We offer the best value for money because our training is very interactive, practically oriented, and methodical. Our students come from Nigeria, Congo, Equatorial Guinea, and la Côte d’Ivoire. UMaT must, therefore, be your preferred choice if you are thinking of pursuing a programme in Geological Engineering because our graduates have a competitive edge over other geological engineers/geologists trained from other sister universities.
