The Geomatic Engineering Department is one of the four departments of the Faculty of Mineral Resources Technology of the University of Mines and Technology, Tarkwa. The Department runs a degree programme in Geomatic Engineering which aims at providing knowledge in geometric measurements (surveying) of the earth’s surface. Students undertaking the programme are trained to know the various methods and techniques of acquiring geospatial data from air, land, water and underground; geographic data processing and visualization of the acquired data in the form of maps / plans in hard or soft copies for the delineation of natural resources. The programme also trains students in the setting out of designs and maps / plans for engineering construction and land registration purposes. The Department is resourced with competent lecturers with high sense of professionalism and expertise in mine surveying, remote sensing, GIS, engineering surveying and cadastral surveying.

The Department among others is resourced with stereoscopic workstations for digital photogrammetric data acquisition, global positioning systems (GPS) receivers, and electronic theodolite for providing control and for conducting preliminary and cadastral surveys. The Department undertakes consultancies in the area of staff training for companies and individuals. Topographic and preliminary survey services are also rendered.

Graduates from the Department are employed immediately after the completion of the programme due to the exposure they receive in the use of state of the art equipment employed during field work on campus coupled with industrial attachments they under take during vacations. Graduates are employed by the Mining Companies, Construction Companies, Geographic Information Management Firms, The Survey Department, District Assemblies, Environmental Agencies, and Non Governmental Organisations etc.

The cordial relationship which exists between the teaching staff and students further enhances learning and research making the Geomatic Engineering Department the preferred Department of choice for those candidates who are thinking of studying engineering.
