Mission

The University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) Library strives to meet the information needs of students, faculty and staff of the University. The Library contributes to teaching, learning and research by acquiring, organizing and storing information and maintaining an environment conducive to study. Personnel in the Library provide library users with instruction in the use of the Library’s resource.

Library users code of conduct

The facilities of the UMaT Library are provided for the benefit of the whole University. Users of the Library are expected to act responsibly and courteously in order to preserve the Library facilities, environment and collections. Please:

  • Treat library staff and users with respect and courtesy. Library staff will treat you with respect and courtesy.
  • Respect the needs of other users of the library: If you have group project work to do or group discussion use the Group Discussion Room.All other open study areas are for quiet or silent study.
  • The use of mobile phone must be limited. Set mobile phone on non audible signals while in the Library.
  • Do not consume food or drinks in the library.
  • Take good care of books, journals and other library property or equipment.
  • Look after your personal property well. Do not leave money or any valuable item in  your bag deposited at the bag section. The library will not under any circumstance take responsibility of theft, damage or loss of property.
  • Leave the Library promptly at closing time. Advance warning of closure is always given by ringing a bell.


Services

Do I need a library card in order to borrow?

  • Yes your UMaT Student ID Card is your library card. Bring it along with you any time you come to the library.
  • All bonafide library users must present their ID card to check out library materials.
  • ID Cards are not transferrable.

Who can Borrow?

  • Currently registered UMaT Students, Lecturers and Staff.

What can I Borrow?

All library materials except:

  • Periodicals/journals
  • Reference, Indexes and Abstracts.

How long can I Borrow?

  • Graduate and Underground students can check out UMaT Library materials for 2 weeks with one renewal of 2 weeks.
  • Staff- One Semester
  • Lecturers – One Academic Year.
  • Recall – please note that all items can be recalled by other patrons. If an item is recalled, the loan period will be shortened and it cannot be renewed.

Short Loan (Reserve Collection)

The short loan collection is used to increase the availability of items that have been judged to be heavily in demand. These are materials which are kept in locked cases. Users borrow these items for short periods only and are used only in the library.

Online Resources

The Library provides database services. Database contains large amount of data which can be either bibliographical reference to journal articles, books, conferences, theses, reports and other source of information in full text and or abstract. The Library provides access to its databases through its IP address. To view the databases select list of databases from the menu. Please note that the use of databases is restricted to staff and registered students of University of Mines and Technology, Tarkwa.
