The Governing Body

The governing body of the University is the University Council, which consist of members as stipulated in the Act. The day-to-day administration of the University is carried out by the Vice Chancellor with the direct assistance of the Registrar. The principal officers of the University are the Vice Chancellor, the Pro Vice Chancellor, the Registrar, the Finance Officer and the Librarian.

The University of Mines and Technology is structured into the Faculty of Mineral Resources Technology, the Faculty of Engineering and the School of Postgraduate Studies. The two faculties together have a total of seven departments – Geomatic Engineering, Geological Engineering, Mining Engineering, Mineral Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Mathematics. In addition to these are the Basic Schools made up of the Primary and the Junior Secondary School.

The University is headed by the Vice Chancellor appointed by the University Council. The University Council approved the structure and organisation of the University and its statutory including the award of certificates to the graduates of the University.

Academic Board

There is University Academic Board, which is the highest body after the University Council. The membership of the Board include the Vice Chancellor, Pro Vice Chancellor, Deans, Heads of Departments, Professors, University Librarian, representatives of lecturers and students. The Registrar is the Secretary to the Academic Board. The powers and functions among others is to formulate and carry out the academic policy of the University, regulate and approve the programme of studies and examinations. The University Academic Board is also to promote research. The University Academic Board in doing these is assisted by a number of Committees of which there are thirteen.

The University Academic Board, the Vice Chancellor, Pro Vice Chancellor and Registrar constitute the body at the policy level positions of the University. They are assisted in the day to day running of the University at the Executive level by the University Finance Officer, Deans, Librarian, Internal Auditor, Security Officer and Works Director.
