The Newmont Delegation Right in a Meeting wth UMaT Officials
A five member delegation from Newmont Ghana Gold Limited has paid a working visit to the University of Mines and Technology. The delegation was led by the Vice President for Sustainability and External Relations, Newmont Africa, Madam Adiki Ayitevie and the Regional Vice President, Human Resources, Awo Quaison-Sackey, Briefing the Vice Chancellor on the purpose of their visit, Madam Adiki explained that they were in UMaT to strike a strategic partnership with the University which they hope would be mutually beneficial.
According to the team, Newmont had a national level Corporate Social Responsibility programme and one of the pillars of the programme focuses on education which is termed Tertiary-Secondary Skills Enhancement Programme (T-SSEP). This programme according to the team has under it the Newmont Global University Strategy. This strategy aims at partnering 3 Universities in Ghana including UMaT as part of efforts to create sustainable economy and to continue to impact the lives of the people in the areas they operate. According to the Regional Talent Management Manger, Madam Georgina Bartels, a key element of the University programme was that selected Senior Leaders within the Company in the Africa Region would be Executive Sponsors to help establish Strategic and Valued partnership with the Universities concerned. These Universities she said should offer courses that are relevant to Newmont’s business needs. These courses include Mining Engineering, Metallurgy or Minerals Engineering, Geomatic Engineering and Earth Science or Geological Engineering.
Madam Georgina Bartels indicated that the Relationship they seek to establish will grow in 3 primary directions including the University graduate to be a key feeder into the professional jobs within Newmont, Student engagement - this will allow Newmont an opportunity to engage directly with the students of UMaT and academic partnerships to enable Newmont to work at the appropriate levels within the University to achieve mutual goals including Newmont Executive Sponsors liaising and engaging UMaT Faculty to ensure alignment to industry and Newmont’s needs. She was impressed about the fact that UMaT would be the hub for the training of mining engineers for Newmont.

Welcoming the delegation to UMaT, the Vice Chancellor, Prof J. S. Y. Kuma expressed his happiness for making it a point to come to UMaT to pay the visit with the aim of establishing this important partnership. He gave them a brief history of the University and indicated that UMaT was a specialised institution that trains engineers in the fields of Mining, Petroleum and other engineering programmes. According to Prof Kuma UMaT students are given real hands-on training in their studies and this, he emphasised, made them always stand out and ready for the job market. Prof Kuma promised the commitment of UMaT for the development of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that will soon be signed. He expressed his excitement for the fact that the MoU would include internships which he emphasised would help the students to strengthen their practical skills, provide the avenue for consultancy services and collaborative research for staff. He was happy that there was a desire by the delegation to have the MoU signed soon.
Present at the meeting were Assoc Prof V. A. Temeng, the Pro Vice Chancellor, Mr A. K. Doku, the Registrar of UMaT, Assoc Prof Samuel Ndur, the Vice Dean of FMRT and Mr Paul Yeboah, the University Relations Officer.

The Inter-Denominational Chaplaincy Board of the University of Mines and Technology, Tarkwa has organised a one day seminar for young ladies of the University as part of the Annual Thanksgiving Service. The theme for the seminar was “The Unstoppable Woman” and was chaired by Assoc Prof Grace Ofori-Sarpong, Head of the Department of Petroleum Engineering. Prof Ofori-Sarpong said that as ladies they would encounter lots of pressure but they should ensure that they were able to withstand them as they go about their studies since according to her they have been made fearfully by God. She said they should see themselves as brands and never let their brand to be abused.
The Vice Chancellor, Prof J. S. Y. Kuma also graced the occasion as a guest of honour and delivered the welcome address. The Vice Chancellor admonished the ladies to take their time management seriously since according to him, attending programmes late was not going to help them to achieve their desired goals in life. He thanked Rev Mrs Happy Crenstil for accepting to come to UMaT to be the Special Guest of Honour for the 2nd Ladies Summit.
Rev Mrs Happy Crenstil is a well sought after conference speaker and resource person in various local and international groups and churches including Full Gospel Business Men’s Fellowship International both in Ghana and abroad.Rev Mrs Georgina Happy Crenstil, is the founder of Courageous Women International and the Executive Vice President of DOXA Global Incorporated in the USA and Ghana. Mrs Crenstil thanked the Vice Chancellor for inviting her to be the special guest of honour at the 2nd ladies summit to interact with the female students of the University. According to her, in a lot of ways, the University provided the young ladies with the opportunity to grow and learn as persons, to discover who they were, and create friendships and experiences that will last them a lifetime.
She told the ladies that she came to the summit with the aim to stir them up and to put their destiny in focus with the kingdom’s direction and to position them mentally, psychologically, spiritually, emotionally and physically so that they would leave the summit grounds being totally changed persons and also that when they were finally done with their studies and the world of work they would be found as relevant ladies to the society. She told them that the unstoppable woman was the woman that was strategically positioned in a certain place in God.
She used Mary the mother of Jesus Christ as an example of a woman who had been positioned by God and said Mary had opened the door for every woman to be positioned ready for God in any given time that God needed a woman and so that woman would become unstoppable, unmovable, strategic for God and relevant to her generation.
Finally, she told the ladies to hold on to their faith and to live under the grace of God. She explained that it was important for them to realise that the University community was one of the most diverse environments they would ever find themselves. They would come into contact with a lot of people who believe in different things but for the ladies she said they should not lose sight of their faith. She admonished them never to underestimate the power of prayer in their academic lives. She continued to advise them that when faced with challenges and there seemed to be no way out, they should put their trust in the Lord for He who had begun a good thing in them will see them through to the end. She advised them to keep the right company.
