In the spirit of the University’s academic and industrial relations and co-operation, the Vice Chancellor, Prof J. S. Y. Kuma on behalf of the University of Mines and Technology, Tarkwa, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Newmont Goldcorp Ghana at a short ceremony held at the Head Office of the Company. Awo A. Quaison-Sackey, the Regional Vice President in charge of Human Resources signed on behalf of Newmont Goldcorp Ghana.

Addressing a gathering at the Newmont Head Office, the Vice Chancellor, Prof J. S. Y. Kuma indicated that It was his hope that the relationship the University sought to firm up by the signing of the MoU would grow in the directions that would make UMaT graduates a key feeder into the professional jobs within Newmont, provide a platform for student and academic staff engagement to achieve mutual goals including Newmont Executive Sponsors liaising and engaging UMaT Faculty to ensure alignment to industry and Newmont’s special needs. He assured that UMaT is strategically positioned more than ever to be the hub for the training of mining engineers for Newmont and other mining companies in Africa and the world.

He further said that, It was instructive to note that one of the strategic objectives of the partnership was to support the journey towards inclusion and diversity in the study of STEM programmes and ultimately in the extractive industry through various activities. He stated that UMaT had a gender mainstreaming policy which was very much alive and vigorously being pursued. He said that conscious efforts were made to admit more women to UMaT’s engineering programmes every year by visiting the Senior High Schools to attract the ladies.

Awo A. Quaison-Sackey, the Regional Vice President in charge of Human Resources, Newmont Goldcorp indicated that over the years they have made it their priority to manage their business processes in a manner that created an overall positive impact in the society. One key way they did this, according to her, was through this kind of partnership with like-minded organisations such as UMaT. “The MoUs we are signing today formalise these relationships and reinforce our commitment to enhancing the quality of education in the country, promoting inclusion and diversity, and the growth of the mining industry”, she emphasised.

According Awo A. Quaison-Sackey, Newmont Goldcorp’s Global University Strategy sought to leverage emerging skillsets to create a robust and diverse talent pipeline for the future needs of their business and industry.  This strategy she added was informed by Newmont Goldcorp’s people pillar and the Company’s Human Capital Priorities, which involve talent and leadership development, inclusion and diversity and developing the next generation workforce.

The responsibilities of the Parties in the MoU are spelt out as follows:

  1. Newmont Goldcorp Ghana commits to:
  2. Provide internship opportunities annually for UMaT students
  3. Provide opportunities for UMaT students to apply for the Newmont Graduate Program, Undergraduate Local Talent Program and Underground Graduate Talent Program
  • iii. Participate in annual career fairs
  1. Institute awards for top performing female graduating students
  2. Sponsor strategic outreach programs
  3. Provide resource persons for UMaT seminars
  • vii. Donate computers that meet the specifications of the University
  • viii. Support research and in-field knowledge building activities of both UMaT faculty and students
  1. Provide financial support for agreed programs
  1. UMaT commits to:
  2. Provide a platform for Newmont to engage with students through seminars and career fairs
  3. Partner in undertaking solution-based research that improve industry practices
  • iii. Support opportunities for acquiring industry best practices that improve teaching
  1. Organse student outreach programs
  2. Ensure technological support provided is maintained and used as intended
  3. Provide Newmont with Diversity statistics as and when required
  • vii. Provide data on employment statistics of alumni (Current employment)

Prof Kuma reiterated that UMaT will be very much committed to the tenets of the MoU to the latter, because it would heighten the University’s emphasis on practical training of students and that, in spite of its size, the performance would be based on what the minds, hearts and hands of UMaT students can do. He assured Newmont Goldcorp Ghana of a successful implementation of the tenets of the MoU.
