AngloGold Ashanti Iduapriem Limited has committed an amount of GH¢1.5M to construct a 6-Unit Classroom Block which is the first phase of the 12-Unit Classroom Block for the University of Mines and Technology Basic School (UBaS). At a short ceremony to cut the sod for the construction work to commence, the Acting Managing Director for AngloGold Ashanti Iduapriem Limited, Mr Stephen Asante Yamoah said there was no gainsaying the fact that education held the key to national development and therefore guaranteed the youth a sustainable future. This was the reason why according to him, the company had released an amount of 1.5 million Ghana Cedis for the construction of the six–unit classroom block with modern facilities. He added that the project was expected to be completed in four months.

Mr Stephen Asante Yamoah further indicated that, they had responded positively to the request of the Vice Chancellor of UMaT, Prof J. S. Y. Kuma and believed the project will contribute to improving access to quality basic education in the Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipality. He said that the Company will always support their host communities through the Basic Education Improvement Programme which is in line with the UN sustainable developmental goals by providing infrastructure, other teaching and learning materials with the aim to improve the quality of teaching and learning.

The Senior Vice President for Africa Region of the Company, Mr Jasper Musadaidzwa, who is the immediate past Managing Director of the Company, indicated that he would have loved to have rather be the one to hand over the project to the University since according to him as the Managing Director of the Company he worked very hard to get the project started, however, due to some financial challenges the Company faced, it had to delay a bit. He was however excited that the project was starting during his tenure as the Senior Vice President for Africa Region of the Company.  He further indicated that AngloGold Ashanti was appreciative of Management of UMaT for the UBaS admissions some staff of the Company receive for the wards, because according to him, it was one condition that helped them to recruit quality staff for the Company and that the staff of AngloGold Ashanti Iduapriem Limited were very happy about that.

Responding, the Vice Chancellor of UMaT, Prof J. S. Y. Kuma praised the efforts of the Company led by Mr Jasper’s predecessor, Mr Sicelo Ntuli, to assist UBaS to get the project started. He indicated that although UBaS requested for a 12-Unit Classroom Block, it was gratifying to note that funds had been released for the construction of the first phase of a 6-Unit Classroom Block. He clarified that UBaS was first and foremost a basic school for wards of staff of the University of Mines and Technology and that it was only when there were vacancies that members of the community would be given quotas. He emphasised that by virtue of this development, the wards of staff of AngloGold Ashanti Iduapriem Limited would be given a reasonable quota. He expressed gratitude to the Company for their gesture and hoped that the Contractor would work to schedule.

The Project Manager for the Construction work, Ing Bernard Fynn, pledged on behalf of the Contractor to do a good job that will stand the test of time and would ensure the project is completed and handed over on schedule.

Also present at the sod-cutting ceremony were the Pro Vice Chancellor, Assoc Prof V. A. Temeng, the Chairman of the UBaS Management Committee, Assoc Prof Sulemana Al-Hassan, the Registrar, Mr A. K. Doku, the Headmistress, Ms Angela Kwasi and her staff members and the University Relations Officer, Mr Paul Yeboah.
