Members of the first batch of the Local Management Committees of the Minerals Development Fund for the Tarkwa mining area have been inaugurated at the University of Mines and Technology Main Auditorium, Tarkwa.

Delivering his welcome address at the event, the Vice Chancellor of UMaT, Prof. J. S. Y Kuma indicated that the establishment of these Local Management Committees will help the Minerals Development Fund to perform the function of facilitating the socio-economic development of these mining communities to avoid disturbing the cordial relations existing between the mining communities and the mining companies.

According to him, qualitative  human  resources through education  and  youth  orientation was  the end product  to  nation  building;  it  emancipated and empowered communities to achieve economic and social freedom thereby instilling or inculcating in them the spirit of oneness and sense of allegiance to the nation as a whole. He therefore appealed to the Local Management Committee (LMC) of the Tarkwa mining area to consider the development of the human resources of the people in the area as an important part of their programmes when they make decisions about the disbursement of the funds allocated to them.

Prof Kuma assured the Tarkwa LMC of UMaT’s readiness to offer any support to the Committee since according to him, it is in UMaT that the best expertise could be found when it comes to the management of mining related issues with the communities in the operational areas of the mining companies. He commended the Administrator of the Minerals Development Fund Dr Norris Kweku Hammah and the Board for choosing UMaT as the venue for such an important programme.

The Deputy Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Hon Benito Owusu Bio who performed the inaugural ceremony on behalf of the Hon Minister for Lands and Natural Resources reiterated Governments commitment to ensure that all resources from the MDF were used for their intended purposes including facilitating development of the communities in the operational areas of the mining companies. He further said that it was important for the mining communities to see the worth of the minerals exploited from their soil.

In a speech delivered by the Chief of Dompim and Chairman for the occasion  Ahyiawora Bian Nyowa Panyin, it was clear that upon all the mineral resources they had, they still lacked development in their communities. He also requested the Chiefs in the traditional area to assist the mining companies to transform Wassa Fiase and Ghana.

In his acceptance speech, the Chairman for the Tarkwa LMC, Mr Benjamin Asabil commended the President of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo-Addo and the Governing Board of the Minerals Development Fund for the confidence reposed in them to stair the affairs of the LMC. A cheque of One Million Ghana Cedis was advanced to the newly established LMC as seed money to start work with.
