The Academic Gown

As a Graduand of the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), you are required to wear the right Academic Gown also known as the ‘Academic Regalia for the Congregation ceremony. The regalia comprises:

  1. A gown
  2. A hood
  3. A mortarboard (cap)

Graduands are entreated to wear a formal dress under the gown as it is a formal occasion.

Gowns for Various Programmes:

Note that, there are different gowns to be worn by graduands of the various degrees. Graduands are required to wear gowns strictly appropriate to their degrees/diplomas, as follows:

*Undergraduates       - Green Gown with appropriate hood & cap

*MPhil/MSc/MBTM     -  Black Gown with appropriate hood & cap

*PhD                        -  Red Gown with appropriate hood & cap

How To Wear the Academic Regalia:

Step 1

Wear the gown: The loose outer garment, which is (dark green for undergraduates, black for postgraduates (MPhil/MSc/MBTM), and Red for Doctoral Graduands) should be worn with the stole facings (kente) aligned below the collarbone and not overlapping. It should be worn over a formal and decent outfit.

Step 2

Wear the hood: It should be worn with the hood part to the back and the tapering part (neckband) to the front of your gown, around the neck. You may secure the neckband in place with a safety pin.

The hood has an inner lining of satin (yellow (FMMT & FGES) / blue (FoE) for BSc, green for MPhil/MSc/MBTM, and lemon green for PhD)  which should not be fully exposed.  The cowl of the hood hangs against the back in a fold which exposes just the edge of the hood lining.

Step 3

Put on the cap or mortarboard. It has two tapered edges. The cap should be worn with the smaller tapered side towards the front of your face (above your forehead). The tassel attached to the cap should be worn on the right side before the degree is conferred and afterward shifted to the left the moment the degree is awarded.

NB: Gentlemen should note that the cap must be removed on stepping up the stage for handshakes.
