The Department of Petroleum Engineering of the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), Tarkwa has won the 2017 PetroBowl Quiz Competition for the second consecutive time. They defended the title at the competition held at the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR), Sunyani.

This victory is a very important milestone in the annals of the PetroBowl quiz competition because after setting a record as the only University to host and win the competition in 2016, UMaT stands out as the only University to have so far defended the title in Ghana. This year’s event was spectacular because the winner will be representing the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Ghana Chapter as part of four other SPE African Regional participants in the SPE Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition (ATCE) in San Antonio, Texas, USA in October, 2017. The PetroBowl quiz competition is the headline event of the SPE Ghana Students Conference where SPE Student Chapters come in competition with each other.

Five out of seven Universities were present for this year’s event. These were All Nations University College (ANUC), Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Regional Maritime University (RMU), University of Mines and Technology, and University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR). However, Regional Maritime University (RMU) did not participate in the competition. As such, the four Universities were paired against each other at the first round of the competition where the winners qualified to the finals and the losers battled for third and fourth places.

ANUC was paired with KNUST while UENR was paired with UMaT for the knockout stage. ANUC eliminated KNUST whiles UMaT also eliminated UENR. KNUST and UENR competed for the 3rd and 4th places while the grand finale slot was between ANUC and UMaT. UENR knocked out KNUST for the 3rd place slot while UMaT also eliminated ANUC after a wonderful two-round contest. Team UMaT then emerged winners of the 2017 PetroBowl competition.
