The University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), Tarkwa has successfully hosted the 22nd edition of the Inter University Cross Country Race at the University’s campus at Tarkwa. This is the second time UMaT has hosted the competition in the competition’s history. The competition was a 10-kilometre race for both men and women. 
 
The cross-country competition is one of the flagship programmes of the Ghana University Sports Association (GUSA). The competition which was governed by the rules of the International Athletics Association Federation (IAAF), attracted 135 athletes from the GUSA member institutions, including the University of Ghana (UG), Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), University of Cape Coast (UCC), University of Education, Winneba (UEW), University for Development Studies (UDS), University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) and University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR). 
 
The women set the ball rolling at exactly 7.00 a.m.after the Registrar of UMaT, Mr A. K. Doku had fired the gun for the start of the race. The men followed two hours later after the Pro Vice Chancellor, Assoc Prof V. A. Temeng had fired the gun for the start of the race. Each institution presented 10 athletes in both categories. Only six institutions namely University of Ghana, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, University of Cape Coast, University of Education, Winneba, University for Development Studies and the University of Professional Studies, Accra competed in both the women and men races whilst all nine participating institutions battled for honours in the men division.

The winner for the women’s race was Elizabeth Azuure from UDS. She finished the race with a time of 41 minutes 54 seconds. The second position was taken by Charlotte Fordjuor also from UDS with a time of 43 minutes 11 seconds. Sarah Owu from UCC came third with a time of 44 minutes. In the men’s race, Malik Yakubu from UCC came first with a time of 36 minutes 42 seconds followed by Matthew Nantiere also from UCC with a time of 36 minutes 42.48 seconds. The third position was won by Yakubu Al-Hassan from UDS with a time of 37 minutes 06 seconds.  
 
UDS emerged winners in the women category for the first time in the Institution’s history and subsequently had five of their athletes appearing in the first 10. They amassed 31 points, followed by UCC with 75, UEW with 119, UG with 129, KNUST with 209 and UPSA with 275 points. For the men’s category, UCC came first with 29 points, followed by UEW – 79, UG – 144, UDS – 173, KNUST – 207, UENR – 227, UMaT – 307, UPSA – 346 and finally UHAS picked 399 points.

At the closing ceremony, the Pro Vice Chancellor, Assoc Prof V. A. Temeng who stood in for the Vice Chancellor, indicated that as a university UMaT was mindful of the importance of sports for the development and training of its students. He said that the University recognises the importance of sports as a tool in all its activities. Prof Temeng further said that UMaT was very happy, therefore, to host this very important event of the Ghana Universities Sports Association (GUSA).  “It is the believe of the University that this event has really helped to create a shared space and experience that has inculcated in all of you the values of selflessness, determination, endurance and patriotism as well as build self esteem, leadership skills and community relations and spirit in you” Prof Temeng said. 
 
On behalf the Vice Chancellor, he expressed the gratitude of the University Management to the Local Organising Committee led by Assoc Prof Michael Affam, the GUSA Executive Committee, all the Officials of the event, the UMaT SRC and all persons who made it possible for the event to be organised in a free and fair atmosphere.  He congratulated the winners and wished the losers better luck next time.
