Office of Research, Innovation and Consultancy (ORIC) Staff attend a Grants Management Workshop

As part of efforts to build the capacity of the newly established Office of Research, Innovation and Consultancy (ORIC) of the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), a 5-member team from the Office attended a 2-day workshop held at the University of Ghana, Legon. The 5-member team was led by Dr (Mrs) Cynthia Boye, the Vice Dean of the Office. 
 
The workshop was one of the activities under a training grant by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) titled “Capacity Building for Enhanced Research Administration (CaBERA).” The grant was awarded to the University of Ghana in collaboration with Yale University and it is hosted at the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR). The project, which is on-going, is aimed at building the capacity of Research Administrators and Researchers for enhanced research output in the beneficiary institutions. 
 
The Participants were drawn from the University of Ghana (UG), the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), the University of Cape Coast (UCC) and the University of Development Studies (UDS). The facilitators of the workshop included: Professor Kwadwo Koram, former Director of NMIMR; Nana Oye Akuffo, Principal Investigator of the project and Research Development Officer, NMIMR; Professor Henry Tumwijukwe, Makerere University, Kampala, Uganda; and Mahnaz Motevalli-Oliner, Johns Hopkins University, Maryland, USA.
 
The topics discussed during the workshop included: The Office for Research Support – Structure and Resources; Request for Application (Grants Writing/Scientific Career); Essential Elements of a Grant Application; Anatomy of a Successful Application; How to Read a Request for Application (RFA); Finding Funds for your Research Projects; The Budget; The Ideal Research Support Office in Low and Middle Income Countries (LMIC); and Summary of National Institutes of Health (NIH) Structures. 
 
The workshop created a platform for knowledge sharing and networking as well as the opportunity to gain insight into the support services available to Researchers and Project Leaders.
