UMaT SDG Targets

  • GOAL 1: NO POVERTY
  • Working with major stakeholders to reorganize artisanal and small-scale mining from a poverty driven activity into a wealth creation venture through the UMaT ASM Hub.
  • Exploring the linkages between agrarian and mining economies in rural Ghana for improved livelihoods.
  • Improving agricultural productivity and production through IT.
  • GOAL 4: QUALITY EDUCATION
  • Expanding the frontiers of mining and allied education, and working towards the mine of the future through research on sustainable practices, operational efficiency and novel systems.
  • Advancing hands-on training of our students through engineering practice with local artisans.
  • GOAL 5: GENDER EQUALITY
  • Continuing with the gender mainstreaming policy to improve enrollment of females in the male dominated mining and engineering education space to 40% by 2024. The gender mainstreaming agenda has increased female participation from 0.2% in the early 90s to 25% in 2022.
  • Applying mentorship programmes to help females to settle in, and also prepare for the world of work.
  • GOAL 6: CLEAN WATER & SANITATION
  • Working with major stakeholders including this Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources and the National Association of Small-scale Miners, to clean polluted rivers.
  • 80% of water used in the university are from our own boreholes.
  • GOAL 7: AFFORDABLE & CLEAN ENERGY
  • Ongoing research on conversion of waste plastics to fuel is promoting waste treatment and production of affordable energy.
  • Generating potentially affordable and clean energy through the synthesis biodiesel.
  • Adoption of 75% low energy bulbs.
  • GOAL 9: INDUSTRY INNOVATION & INFRASTRUCTURE
  • Developing new concepts and innovations through our career and innovation fairs and incubating some in our Business Incubation Hub.
  • Creating avenues for innovative discourse by utilising the MIIF-UMaT Distinguished Speaker Series on Industrialisation .
  • GOAL 13: CLIMATE ACTION
  • Developing an arboretum, which covers about 10% of the campus area, to support eco-system restoration.
  • Creating and maintaining a buffer zone to preserve a small waterfall on campus.
  • GOAL 15: LIFE ON LAND
  • Utilising the arboretum to help preserve the nine threatened plant (timber) species in Ghana, protecting biodiversity in the Tarkwa area, and conserving wild life and indigenous tree species.
  • GOAL 17: PARTNERSHIPS FOR THE GOALS
  • Developing stronger relationships with government and industry.
  • Making ourselves more relevant to the community through our Radio ASM School and Safety programmes among others, aimed at promoting resilience and disaster preparedness.
